Welcome back to this little inspiration series for upcoming holiday making! Last week featured some projects for your home. This week, it’s all about the kids in our lives. This can sometimes be tricky – the whole concept of “knit worthy” exists for a reason, and I’ve found this especially true when it comes to children. Items get left on the floor and ruined, or a furry friend gets ahold of the item and decides wool is a delicious snack… and it stings quite a bit to find out that the work you put into a project was so quickly and easily ruined. Especially so when you spent so much time finding the perfect yarn and perfect pattern for the recipient.
Unfortunately, we have no control over our work once it leaves our hands. This is why, when making for kids, I tend to opt for non-wool yarn choices – acrylic and cotton tends to limit the temptation of our furry friends to steal the item, plus the yarns hold up to the wear and tear children put items through (especially if they turn out to be well-loved items)
Week 2 – Projects for the Kids
Pillows
Can you ever really have too many pillows? My husband isn’t allowed to answer that, for the record haha. Pillows, in our house, serve as comfy places to knit or read, extra walls for blanket forts, stepping stones on the carpet when pretending the floor is lava… and as much as I get annoyed at reminding my child to stop leaving them all over the floor, they do get a lot of use and that’s kind of the point, right?
Toys & Books
Books are one of my favorite things to gift to kids. I hated it when we received light-up, noisy, plastic toys for Declan, but I treasured all the books we were given. Pairing up a book with a matching toy? PERFECTION! There’s a great selection of cute doll patterns online that you can customize to look like your little one’s favorite storybook character, but little knit critters are my favorite! In our house, we LOVE Frog & Toad and Peter Rabbit.

Hats, Hats, Hats!
We can never have too many hats and gloves in our house. Well, ok, we’re not exactly bursting at the seams with them… but you get what I mean. Extra layers are perfect for those snowy days when your child is begging to go outside and play. What’s the phrase…. there’s no bad weather, just bad clothing? So keep the littles extra warm with some handmade hats!
